Greece pushes forward Cyprus-Israel electricity interconnection project

In a period of increasing geopolitical tension and structural changes in the Eastern Mediterranean region, Greek foreign policy maintains a strategy of proactiveness, aiming both at defending national interests and promoting regional stability.

Within this framework, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou underlined that Greece proceeds with steady steps, guided by International Law, in safeguarding its national and regional interests, despite challenges and reactions from neighbouring countries, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

The spokesperson provided a detailed briefing on the contacts, programs, and developments expected in the coming weeks during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, both in the spotlight and on the sidelines, which are anticipated to further shape Greece’s diplomatic initiatives and position in an environment of geopolitical and diplomatic mobility.

Confirmed Mitsotakis and Erdogan's meeting in New York

During the recent Foreign Ministry briefing, it was confirmed that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson, regarding Greek-Turkish relations, although the High-Level Cooperation Council has not yet been scheduled, since December 2023 there have been ongoing discussions and contacts, the latest taking place in June 2025 in Ankara, within the framework of the Political Dialogue and the Positive Agenda, following a meeting on Confidence-Building Measures. The Athens Declaration established the three pillars of the structured dialogue.
As the Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister have already stated, the High-Level Cooperation Council will be scheduled on the basis of the programs of the leaders of Greece and Turkey.

The electricity interconnection with Cyprus, as well as Israel, has been characterised as a project of geostrategic importance, with secured European support. Greece remains committed to this EU Project of Common Interest, which, beyond European backing, is grounded in International Law and therefore requires no authorisation to proceed. It will move forward according to the timetable set by the construction company.

Greece’s Strategic Positions on Ukraine and the Palestinian Issue

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Greece actively participates with a clear position on the critical international developments and issues concerning the global community, consistently standing in favour of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. She maintained that peace can only be achieved through diplomatic solutions and respect for international law, condemning Russia’s violations and its revisionist war. She emphasised that Greece supports the policy of the European Union and the United Nations on the need for an immediate ceasefire and the promotion of negotiations.

On the Palestinian issue, Greece reiterated its steadfast support for the two-state solution, based on United Nations Security Council resolutions. Priority is given to the immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the provision of humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages. The country underlined its aim for the resumption of a political process, without taking a position for or against the recognition of a Palestinian state, but supporting their right to an independent, functioning state.
