Greece to Block New Migration Route
In his weekly report, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the renewed migration pressure on Greece’s southern maritime borders, calling it an "emergency suffocating situation."
“Our message is clear: Greece will not allow a new illegal entry route into the country or Europe,” he said, recalling the government's firm stance during the 2020 Evros border crisis, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
The prime minister announced emergency measures to close off the migration route from North Africa and urged Libya to cooperate, stating that the country’s relationship with the EU "passes through Greece." He emphasized that the government's approach is "strict, but absolutely legal and justified."
Mitsotakis also commented on public concern over migration, acknowledging citizens’ anxiety while reaffirming that “Greece will not turn into an unguarded place.”
Additionally, he highlighted the European Commission’s Rule of Law report, which noted Greece's progress in justice, transparency, media freedom, and institutional performance. Greece was among 12 EU countries to advance on all recommendations and ranked among the 15 with the fewest outstanding issues.
