UN Security Council adopts resolution calling for end to Russia-Ukraine war
The UN Security Council passed a resolution on Monday urging a "swift end" to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and a lasting peace. The US-drafted resolution secured 10 votes in favor, with five abstentions, including Greece, France, Slovenia, Denmark, and the UK, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
While expressing sorrow over the war’s casualties, the resolution reaffirmed the UN's commitment to global peace but did not explicitly mention Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine—a key issue for some member states.
The UK and EU members sought amendments to clarify the conflict's nature, suggesting "full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation" instead of "Russia-Ukraine conflict." However, these changes were not included.
Following the vote, UK envoy Barbara Woodward criticized the resolution, stating, "No peace will be sustainable without Ukraine's consent." Slovenia’s Samuel Zbogar and Denmark’s Christina Markus Lassen also voiced disappointment, stressing the need for a just and lasting peace that does not equate aggressor and victim.
Despite differing opinions, the resolution underscores the global push for an end to the war and long-term security for Ukraine.
