Ministry Denies Eco-Tax Hike

Energy

The Ministry of Environment and Water has dismissed claims of a drastic rise in environmental taxes, calling recent reports of a 900% surge in eco-taxes on electric appliances baseless. In a statement issued Friday, the Ministry clarified that there have been no legislative changes to environmental taxes since 2008, CE Report quotes BTA

It emphasized that these so-called "eco-taxes" are in fact licensing fees paid to waste treatment facilities to support national waste management goals. These fees remain among the lowest in Europe—up to ten times lower than those in countries like Germany, Austria, and Romania.

The Ministry also noted that these fees do not necessarily lead to higher consumer prices, as part of the cost could be absorbed by manufacturers. The charges aim to promote eco-friendly product design and lighter imports.
