Bulgaria has joined 16 other countries in endorsing the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science at the 23rd annual meeting of the international Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum) in Kyoto, Japan, the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science said on Tuesday.

Bulgaria was represented at the ministerial session by Deputy Education and Science Minister Nikolay Vitanov, CE Report quotes BTA.

The Ministry said Bulgaria’s support for the Kyoto Vision was in line with the country’s efforts to modernise its national research system, develop scientific infrastructure, support young scientists and harness artificial intelligence and digital technologies to improve the quality of scientific research.

The joint declaration sets out three main areas for the development of science: improving mechanisms for organising and financing research; using the potential of artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discoveries; and providing stronger support for students, young scientists and researchers.

The signatory countries encourage the use of more diverse and flexible science funding instruments, as well as the application of metascience approaches to improve the way scientific research is organised and financed. The vision places particular emphasis on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into scientific work and on ensuring researchers have access to modern tools, scientific data, computing resources and experimental infrastructure.

Another priority is developing the next generation of scientists by supporting early-career researchers through practical training, doctoral programmes, scholarships and partnerships between research organisations, universities and other sectors.

The document was endorsed by Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.
