Train Collision Near Sofia Leaves Five Injured, Two Missing

A collision between two freight trains near Sofia on Wednesday afternoon has left five people injured and two missing, according to the Sofia Emergency Medical Centre. The accident occurred between the Svetovrachene and Kremikovtsi railway stations, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) reported, CE Report quotes BTA

Emergency response teams, including five firefighter crews, ambulances, and police, were dispatched to the scene, the Interior Ministry confirmed. The crash involved a diesel and an electric locomotive, with the alarm raised at 4:01 PM. The site has been secured, and an investigation is underway.

Two of the injured have been transported to Sofia's Military Medical Academy for medical evaluations, the hospital stated.

Transport Minister Calls for Resignations

In response to the incident, Caretaker Minister of Transport Krasimira Stoyanova has urged Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev to dismiss Deputy Transport Minister Bisser Minchev, who oversees rail transport. The resignations of Stoyan Stoyanov, Director General of the National Railway Infrastructure Company, and Hristiyan Krastev, head of BDZ Cargo Ltd., have also been demanded.
