International Mountain Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 11 December 2003, following the UN's proclamation of International Mountain Day in 2002, which highlighted the need for continued awareness of the importance of mountains. .

Mountains not only provide sustenance and well-being for the 720 million mountain people around the world, but indirectly benefit billions more living in urban areas. Practically, mountains bring clean water, energy and food – resources that will become increasingly scarce in the coming decades.
